Mobile phone radiation effects on the environment

Mobile phone is a necessity in these technological times, but do we stop for a while and ask about their environmental impact? Mobile phones emit a form of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, like a low-powered microwave oven. Mobile devices increasingly flood our residential zones and the environment with electromagnetic fields. European Environment Agency (EEA), the top scientific environment authority in Europe, has warned of the possibility of looming environmental disasters following the increasing density of electromagnetic radiation.

Mobile phone devices was originally developed for the Department of Defense, it was never tested for safety when it entered the marketplace. Today there are more than two billion mobile phone users being exposed every day to the dangers of electromagnetic radiation (EMR). The public is little aware of these risk because they are not informed.

Mobile technology created electromagnetic radiation on earth is threatening ecological balance. Mobile phone radiations could be having varying negative impact on wildlife, particularly birds and bees. Animals that depend on electromagnetic fields for their orientation and navigation are confused by the stronger and constantly changing artificial fields created by this technology. The most affected of all is the most important insect species: the honeybee.

The bees happen to be the most indispensable insect needed for pollination and fructification of vegetable and agricultural crops. When the bees are in danger, our food supply will also be in danger. Mobile phone radiation contributes to colony collapse disorder in bees. Radiation interferes with bee’s navigation system, they become stressed and disoriented preventing them to find their way to the hive.

But not only are the bees and other insects disappearing – birds as well. An investigation in Spain showed that the number of sparrows was reduced when the electromagnetic field exceeded certain values. And even storks that built their nest near base stations could not rear any chicks. It is quite evident that electrical fields are damaging the reproduction of the stork.

The effects of mobile phone radiation not only stop on human, insects and animals but it extend to the trees as well. A study conducted by Wageningen University found that trees in areas with high Wi-fi activity were suffering from symptoms that couldn’t be tied to typical bacterial or viral causes. The symptoms included bleeding fissures in the bark, the death of parts of leaves, and abnormal growth. The researchers took 20 ash trees and exposed them to various kinds of radiation for three months. The trees exposed to Wi-Fi signals showed telltale signs of radiation sickness, including a “lead-like shine” on their leaves, caused by the dying of the upper and lower epidermis of the leaves. The researchers are planning several more studies to figure out the precise effects of radiation on plant life. If these continue there will be forest decline and desertification.

Natural electrical and magnetic fields are important for the orientation and navigation of a whole range of animals. Today this natural information and functional system of humans, animals and plants has been superimposed by electromagnetic field generated by mobile communication technologies. The consequences of this development should not be ignored; the long-term effects of mobile phone radiation on the environment must be addressed immediately.

Recycling and Waste Management in the Hunter Valley

The decreasing landfill space, harmful environmental impacts of landfills, snowballing costs of waste disposal, and the increasing consumption of natural and non-renewable resources are all very good reasons to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

The majority of the rubbish that ends up in the landfills is made up of organic and degradable materials that release greenhouse gases as they break down. Many of the different materials in the waste could be diverted before they reach the waste stream or have potential resource value if they could be recovered or recycled cost-effectively. It’s a good thing there are trusted rubbish removal companies in Australia which provide cost-effective waste management and recycling solutions.

With Sydney landfills and dumpsites reaching their capacity, there have been proposals on building a facility in the Hunter Valley to accommodate at least 8 million tonnes of waste from Sydney and other regions for the next 20 years.

This has been opposed by some group sectors as there’s always a big concern for public health especially with the waters being contaminated. Winemakers are also opposing as they fear that the dumping sites could wipe out the famous Hunter Valley grapevines and destroy a multimillion-dollar industry.

To help minimise waste and spread awareness, City councils are launching campaigns to save the environment. For instance, Maitland City Council has been working with other councils of the Hunter and the Central Coast Region to protect the bushland, parks and urban area centres from illegal dumping. Their campaign called “Dobbing in a Dumper” encourages residents to report any illegal dumping incidents to the council by providing information about the offender (description of person, car registration number, etc.).

There are more than 22 million people currently living in Australia and it is projected that the average Australian produces about 1 tonne of garbage per year and that is a lot of rubbish! With the country’s growing population, we cannot afford to maintain this rate of waste disposal.

Although many people are into recycling, our economy and society still waste a lot of resources that could be re-used and made into new products. The general public should have the initiative and take full responsibility of their own waste and the government must take action to work with the community to have a zero waste society. After all, when your region is as beautiful as the Hunter Valley, wouldn’t you want to preserve and keep it beautiful?

Hunter Valley Haunted by Lay-offs

The Hunter Valley coal chain is among the largest coal mining areas of Australia. The port of Newcastle has seen rapid financial development and is now the world’s biggest coal exporting port. Of late, the demand and price of coal have seen a steady downswing. This has led many of the existing coal mines to downsize. Over the years news reports have shown that nearly ten thousand jobs have been lost either directly or indirectly because of these lay-offs.

Not just miners

It is not just the miners and their families that are affected by the loss of jobs. Many other small businesses built around the mines like restaurants, service centres, fuel stations, and other local shops and businesses are also direly affected. If jobs are slowly lost in the same manner, the towns surrounding the mines may become ghost towns as people may have to leave elsewhere in search of work.

Economics of it all

This has come at a time when coal prices have dropped dramatically in Australia, almost 50 to 70 percent. Analysts of Bureau of Resource Energy Economics (BREE) have pointed out that the main reason for this fall was the demand for coal from Asia a few years back, which forced the development of infrastructure to accommodate the perceived demand. The slump in Chinese demand for coal after only a few years put a strain on the now expanded capacity, which could not be fully utilized. The resulting over excess supply eventually shot down prices.

Carbon tax has also taken stabs at the industry, with nearly 800 million dollars going towards it in the last year. The government is expected to intervene with some new policies for those who have been laid off. Some strategies of financial development can sustain the towns until the mines can be functional again.

Cautiously optimistic about the future

The new mine in Queensland is touted to be the biggest mine in Australia. It promises new jobs, but BREE has also noted that growth cannot be as quick and that the upswing will take it’s time. The export of coal has grown between 2012 and 2013. The recent slumps can bounce back as export of coal and financial development is expected to get stronger in the coming years.

The main consumers of coal are thermal power plants and iron and steel industries. BREE has pointed out that the world will never stop demanding steel and power, so exports will improve as expected and the financial development of Hunter Valley will get back on track. Until then there is very little that the laid off miners can do but wait.

For all businesses in the Hunter Valley, now it an important time to be careful with your finances. If companies have any issues with cash flow, then business loans may be able to help. Through planned financial development, the Hunter Valley region can take the brunt of these tragic lay-offs now and look to create a more secure financial future.

Technology is constantly evolving and creating new ways of making our lives easier. It invents new manners to keep us connected, sharing moments, interests and opinions. Social media, for instance, puts you one click away from telling all your friends and acquaintances everything about you: places you’ve been, songs you like, friends you share with others and pictures that represent who you are. And that might be the reason why Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc, are so popular. It’s easy to use and to connect with whom you want to.

But then it’s time to go to work and you feel like you went back in time. Never ending structures, mandatory authorizations from different sectors and levels for almost every task you have to do and hundreds of emails in your mailbox every day, which reflects a great difficulty of communicating with co-workers and sharing and updating files. These cause people to spend most of their time undertaking trivial time-consuming activities that prevent them from getting the real work done. And the best thing is you don’t have to be a developer to be able to use it.

SharePoint development is a collaboration software designed by Microsoft that helps, sharing, updating and archiving company files, managing projects, costs and risks and connecting people. More effectively used in organizations with more than 30 employees, it allows users to work together and share and update documents online without having to store several different versions. They can even work on the same document simultaneously as well as upload files straight from Microsoft Office.

Archiving files is simple and if done correctly employees will be able to find files with hardly any effort. Users can choose to file documents under a folder or use tags to organize under themes. They can use multiple values, which mean it’s possible to use more than one tag to identify files in SharePoint 2013, something that could not be done in previous versions.

But with all those features companies might perceive as undesirable providing their employees unlimited access to all files, which could not be the best scenario if there are confidential, documents that cannot be seen by everyone. And that’s why it allows you to choose who has permission to see and modify documents. It’s possible to select certain members, areas or even groups of people working on a project together. The system is user-friendly software that will improve efficiency in your workplace if it’s correctly developed and customised to satisfy your company needs.

New Anti-Ageing Clinic in Sydney

The Hunter Valley is not so much a retirement region that it’s called “God’s Waiting Room” like Port Macquarie is. Nevertheless it’s good to know that a new clinic just opened in Chatswood is not much more than an hour down the highway when you want a bit of rejuvenation. CATHERINE BLUM reports …

Doctors are always mentioning how important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle to live a better, longer life. Eating well and exercising your body and mind are the most basic – yet essential – recommendations they give to their patients. But we often get caught up in our busy lives, working, taking care of our families and worrying about a million other things that sometimes we forget to take good care of our health. And it’s only when we notice some changes or problems that we decide to take a closer look to what’s going on in our bodies.
Besides, it’s not only general health people should be conscious of. Sexual and reproductive health is also a great deal of concern in people’s lives, either because there is something to worry about or because they want to safely prevent or start a new family. And that is what Clinic 66 (previously known as Gynaecare) does: it provides quality treatment so people will have one less thing to be troubled about.
Clinic 66 is a private sexual and reproductive health centre located in Chatswood that offers services for women and men without them necessarily needing a referral. The centre has several experienced and competent doctors who have seen and are able to deal with all sorts of situations. Regarding women’s health they offer services in gynaecology, treating menopause and menstrual problems, pap tests, and also anti-ageing treatments. Regarding men’s health, services include erectile dysfunction treatments, vasectomy, STD/STI screenings, as well as anti-ageing treatments.
The clinic also offers services in family planning and sexual health for both men and women. Family planning involves dealing with quite a few topics, including unplanned pregnancies, counselling on contraception methods (temporary or permanent), birth control and fertility and infertility treatments. Sexual health comprises services in identifying and treating Chlamydia, STI/STD screenings, HPV and Hepatitis B counselling and immunisation and Herpes screening.
So regardless of age, gender or sexual preferences, the importance of doing regular checkups and being aware of your body can’t be stressed enough, as this can help discovering diseases at an early stage, improving the chances of longevity.
